4 Easy Ways To Bring Your Family Closer Together

As life progresses and your family unit grows, it becomes more and more difficult to find ways to genuinely connect and spend quality time with one another. Let’s face it, even newlywed couples can find it challenging to timeblock slots in their calendar for undivided attention and one-on-one time together.

Although, as with most things in life, if it’s truly important to you, you will find a way to make time for it! Besides, creating memories and enjoying family time together should definitely be a number one priority for you.

Luckily there are plenty of fairly simple things you can do to enhance your family bond and spend more time with each other! Try incorporating these simple tips and 4 Easy Ways To Bring Your Family Closer Together:

  1. Create A Family Routine or Ritual

Don’t narrow your family rituals down to only holidays, birthdays, or anniversaries. Putting in effort to create a unique tradition gives families a way to process their emotions during different stages of their life. It can really help in reestablishing your connection with each other during hardships.

Why not consider choosing a certain day or time of the month/week, and collectively make a commitment to spend that time together as a family, doing something that all of you love! It might be something as simple as a standard pizza and movie evening — but the point should be that you are all hanging out and spending this time together.

Routines and rituals give families a sense of identity and help establish important values. Children learn from example, so dedicating time to creating memories together shows kids that their family prioritises interpersonal interactions and experiences.

  1. Read and Have Meaningful Discussions Together

If you already do read bedtime stories to your children, take things one step further by discussing the books that you read. Studies show that reading even to young infants can help form positive relationships with books and set them up for a lifelong love affair with reading. Discussing what you’ve read also helps younger kids develop their comprehension and critical thinking skills.

Encourage your family members to identify what they liked and didn’t like about the reading material, and ask them why they feel this way. A respectful dialogue between family members demonstrates to everyone that it’s possible to disagree with someone or have a differing opinion and still respect them.

  1. Set Bedtime Around The Same Time Every Night

Coordinating bedtimes for multiple children might be tricky, but if you can make the change, you’re sure to see results. Not everyone has to fall asleep at the same time, but initiating a bedtime routine at the same time each night together as a family can help foster lasting, healthy habits. This could mean scheduling bath time at the same time each night or settling onto the sofa for story time before bed.

Going to bed at more or less the same time every night can have a massive impact on the relationship of a family or couple. Studies show that married couples who go to bed at roughly the same time report less conflict, more in-depth conversation, and more time spent engaged in shared activities. Ask your children for their input, and come to an agreement on a nightly routine that works for everyone and provides a dedicated space to spend time together.

  1. Give Back To Your Community Together

If you want to raise children who are socially conscious, you, as a parent, need to practice what you preach. Together as a family unit, choose an organisation or charity and begin to volunteer your time and resources. Ask your children for input if they are old enough to understand.

Family bonding while serving the community reinforces prosocial behaviour and empathy towards others. In the same way as establishing a family ritual, giving back to a charity or community organisation helps establish a sense of identity and pride.

A tight and closely-knit family doesn’t just happen; it is nurtured and encouraged. However, as we all know, life can get hectic and relationships might get caught in the day-to-day rush. A little planning and effort will help you re-establish connections among family members and improve existing bonds.

Brainstorm with your family more ways you can spend time together to create lasting memories and strengthen your relationship.
